Miami to Belize: The Caribbean Escape That Feels Like Cheating

Miamians are spoiled for water. You have the beach at the end of the block, the Keys down the road, and half the Caribbean a short flight away. So when we say Belize should be next on the list, we know the bar is high.

From Miami you are looking at only about two and a half hours in the air to Belize City, then a short island hop, and you step out into something South Florida cannot give you at any price, an untouched barrier reef and an island town that still moves at island speed.

It is close enough to feel almost unfair. You can leave Miami in the morning and be floating over a reef by the afternoon.

Why Belize, when you already have the beach

That is the honest question for a Miami traveler, and the answer is what Belize has that Miami does not. The Belize Barrier Reef is the second largest on earth, and it is right off Ambergris Caye, not a boat charter and a planning committee away. The water is the kind of clear you fly to the far side of the world for. And San Pedro is small, walkable, golf cart paced, the opposite of the valet lines and velvet ropes that a Miami weekend can turn into. You are not fighting South Beach crowds for a lounge chair. You have your own pool, your own dock, your own boat.

English is the official language, the US dollar is accepted everywhere, and the flight barely counts as long haul. For a lot of our South Florida guests, Belize has quietly become the trip they used to take to the islands, only calmer and more theirs.

The Miami long weekend, done properly

This is where Miami has the real advantage: the flight is so short that a Thursday to Sunday actually works, and works well. Fly out Thursday, and Friday you are on the reef at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley. Saturday, take the boat out to a quiet caye or up the coast to Secret Beach. Sunday, a slow morning by the pool and an easy flight home. Three nights, and it feels like you left the country properly, because you did.

If you can stretch it to a full week, you simply slow everything down: more days on the water, long lunches, nothing on the schedule. Either way the trip out never eats into the holiday, which is the whole point when your time off is precious.

Getting there and back

Nonstop service runs from Miami into Belize City, and from there the island connection carries you across to San Pedro, often as part of the same journey. We walk through exactly how that easy last leg works, and why it is one of the nicest parts of the trip, in our full guide to getting to Ambergris Caye, with the connection itself covered in detail in our Belize City to San Pedro guide.

On fares, Belize tracks demand the way everything does out of Miami. The winter holidays and spring break run highest; the late summer and autumn soften noticeably. If your dates flex, the shoulder weeks reward you, and the weather is still warm and the water still clear.

Where to stay when the group comes

The best Miami trips tend to be the group ones, and that is exactly where a private villa beats a cluster of hotel rooms. Everyone under one roof instead of scattered across floors, a full kitchen, two pools, and your own boat with a captain waiting at the dock. Our beachfront villa on Ambergris Caye has four bedrooms and room for the whole crew. Split among a few couples or a family, it is worth far more than the rooms it replaces. When your dates are set you can check availability.
