What a Week in Belize Actually Costs

Is Belize expensive? The honest answer is that it can be, or it can be very reasonable, depending on how you travel and how your group is sized. Belize prices a lot of things in US dollars and caters to a range of budgets, so a week here is as flexible as you make it. This is a realistic breakdown of where the money goes, and one detail that changes the whole picture for groups.

We will keep the figures as ranges rather than exact prices, because costs move with the season and the exchange details of the day. Use these to plan, and confirm current prices as you book.

Flights

Airfare is usually the biggest single variable, and it depends heavily on your departure city and the time of year. Nonstop flights from the main US gateways are covered city by city in our guides to Miami, Houston, Dallas and Fort Lauderdale. Book in the shoulder weeks and you can cut this cost meaningfully.

Accommodation, in three tiers

This is where the range is widest. At the budget end, a simple room or small apartment in town is inexpensive. In the middle, a comfortable condo or mid range rental gives you space and a kitchen. At the top, a private staffed villa with its own pools and boat is a different kind of trip altogether.

A private villa can look like the more expensive choice, and night for night, it may be. But if you're traveling as a group, or it's a long awaited family outing you have been working to get to this year, that comparison doesn't quite tell the whole story. Here's the part that tends to change how our guests see it.

A four-bedroom villa isn't really competing with a single hotel room; it's competing with four of them. When you share the villa among four couples, or across a family that would otherwise need several rooms, the cost per couple often comes in below what those separate rooms would total. On top of that, you get a full kitchen, private pools, and shared living space that a hotel simply can't offer.

And because a private boat and captain are included with the villa rather than booked as a separate paid excursion, the value tips even further in your favor. We've broken the numbers down in detail, including the per-couple cost, in our guide to what a four-bedroom villa works out at per couple.

Food and drink

Eating out in San Pedro ranges from cheap and excellent local spots to higher-end restaurants at prices you would recognise from a US city. At the casual end, a hearty local plate can cost just a few dollars, while a three-course dinner with wine at one of the upscale waterfront restaurants runs around $80 to $120 per person, and even a relaxed restaurant dinner with drinks for two comes to roughly $100. A realistic daily food budget depends entirely on your mix of the two.

The big lever for groups is the kitchen: with a full villa kitchen, you can cook relaxed breakfasts and the odd dinner in, pick up fresh catch and produce from the local markets, and save eating out for the meals you truly want to make an occasion of. Groceries go a long way here, breakfast basics like bread, eggs, fruit and coffee run about $15 to $20 and cover several mornings for the whole group, so a few market runs can feed everyone for what a single restaurant dinner would cost. That alone can take a serious chunk off your weekly total, without ever feeling like you're cutting back.

And if part of the fun for you is getting out and enjoying the food and the water, Secret Beach is the island's most popular spot, and it's a short trip from the villa. It's known for calm, crystal-clear, shallow water that's perfect for spending the day in, lined with easygoing beach bars and grills where you can order fresh seafood and drinks right from tables set out in the water. A few guest favorites there are Wet n' Wild, loved for its lobster quesadillas and its bar out in the ocean; Secret Beach Cabanas, a standout for ceviche, grilled fish, and its sunset bonfire dinners; and the Secret Beach Waterpark Bar & Grill, a fun pick for families with its inflatable water park and fresh grouper cooked right on the beach.

Getting there is part of the fun, and the easiest way is by water. Just ask your concierge, Marilyn, or Captain Striker to arrange the trip over by boat, and they'll help you plan the perfect day out. However you like to eat, cooking in when it suits you and heading out to Secret Beach when you want the full island day, the villa gives you the freedom to do both on your own terms.

Excursions

The reef trips, fishing, island hops and dive excursions are the experiences people come for, and booked individually through operators they add up over a week. This is another place where having your own boat and captain changes the arithmetic, since a lot of what other visitors pay a tour operator for is simply part of your stay.

What is included versus what is extra

When you compare options, look hard at what is bundled. A resort rate might include some things and charge for others. A villa with a boat, a captain and an on site manager folds several costs that would otherwise be separate line items into one nightly rate. The boat is the clearest example: chartered on its own for a week it is a significant expense, and here it simply comes with the house.

A week, three ways

Put it together and a week in Belize can look very different depending on how you travel. A couple doing it modestly, staying in town and eating locally, spends one way. A family in a mid range rental spends another. A group of four couples sharing a staffed villa with a boat often lands at a per couple figure that surprises people, because the biggest costs are shared and several excursions are already included.

If your trip is the third kind, the villa is worth pricing properly for your dates. See the villa and see what your group's week works out at. Split four ways, a private villa with a boat and captain can cost less per couple than four hotel rooms.
