Belize City Airport to San Pedro: Flights, Water Taxi and Transfers

Good News: you do not need to spend the night in Belize City. You can land at the international airport and be on Ambergris Caye within the hour. And better still, that last stretch across to San Pedro is where the adventure begins.
Belize City sits on the mainland. San Pedro, the town you are headed for, is out on the island a short way off the coast, so after your international flight there is one more short crossing, and it is a good one. There are three ways to make it, and for most people the choice is easy.
The short flight: the best first taste of the island
This is how most of our guests arrive, and it is a joy. You hop on a small plane at the international airport and lift off for a short, low flight straight out to the San Pedro airstrip. It takes only about fifteen minutes, and it is genuinely one of the highlights of the whole trip: the mainland falling away, the barrier reef drawing a long white line through water that turns every shade of turquoise, the island rising up ahead of you. People reach for their phones. By the time the wheels touch down you are already grinning, already on island time.
You do not need to book this weeks ahead. Flights run throughout the day, timed around the international arrivals, so you step off one plane and onto the next with ease. The planes are small, which is exactly what makes the views so good, and the pilots fly this route dozens of times a day. Think of it less as a connection to catch and more as the first activity of your vacation.
One practical note so nothing catches you out: the small planes do not fly after dark. If your international flight lands late in the afternoon, just check there is still a hop out that evening, or aim to arrive earlier in the day. Land by early afternoon and you have your pick of departures.
The water taxi: arrive by sea
Prefer to stay at sea level? The water taxi is a lovely way in. It leaves from downtown Belize City, so you take a short ride from the terminal into town, then board the boat and watch the island appear from the water. The crossing takes roughly ninety minutes to two hours depending on conditions and stops. It costs a fraction of the flight, and for anyone who would rather not take a small plane it is a relaxed, scenic arrival. The trade off is a little more time and the transfer into town, but if you are in no rush it is a fine way to ease into island pace.
Private transfer: the easy option for groups
Arriving as a group, or with a lot of luggage? A private transfer takes the guesswork out entirely. It pairs a boat charter with the ground handling so you are looked after from the terminal to the dock. Split across a family or a group it is very reasonable, and it is the smoothest way to move everyone and their bags in one go, drinks in hand, straight into holiday mode.

Which one should you choose
If you value time and do not mind a small plane, fly. It is quick, scenic and the default choice for good reason. If you are counting costs or nervous about small aircraft, take the water taxi and enjoy the slower arrival. If you are a group of eight or ten landing together with luggage, price out a private transfer, because the per person cost drops fast and the convenience is worth a lot on arrival day.
How the connection lines up with US arrivals
The key is your international arrival time. Land by early afternoon and you have the full range of options, with plenty of evening hops still available. Land late and you narrow your choices, since the planes stop at dusk and the last water taxis leave in the late afternoon. When you book your flights home from your departure city, aim for a mid morning or early afternoon arrival into BZE and the rest falls into place.
And then you are there
The San Pedro airstrip is small and right in town, so within minutes of landing you are on the island proper. We include the transfer from the airstrip to our beachfront villa on Ambergris Caye, so the very last step is handled for you. You step off, we meet you, and the vacation is already underway. Just tell us your arrival details.
