How to Get to Ambergris Caye from the US: The Complete Guide

There is no long layover in a third country, and for most travelers there is no overnight stop along the way. You fly into Belize City, and from there a short island connection carries you out to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. From many US cities the whole trip takes less time than a domestic flight to the opposite coast.

Better still, that final leg is not something to endure on the way to your vacation. Once you land in Belize, the adventure has already started, and the crossing over to the island is the first and best taste of it. Getting there is genuinely simple once you understand the two easy steps involved: the international flight to the mainland, and the short, scenic hop out to the island. This guide covers both, plus what you need to enter and how long to budget door to door.

Which US cities fly nonstop to Belize

Belize has one international airport, Philip S. W. Goldson International, just outside Belize City. Its code is BZE. Several US cities offer nonstop service, and the list is strongest out of the southern states, which is convenient because that is where most of our guests travel from.

The most reliable nonstop gateways are in Texas and Florida, with Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Houston and Dallas all offering direct flights to BZE. Other cities including Atlanta, Charlotte, Newark, Denver, Chicago and Los Angeles also fly nonstop, though some of those routes are seasonal. Approximate flight times run from a little over two hours out of Florida to four or five hours from the West Coast.

We have written a dedicated guide for each of the main feeder cities. If you are flying from one of these, start there: Miami to Belize, Houston to Belize, Dallas to Belize, and Fort Lauderdale to Belize.

The connection from Belize City to San Pedro

This is the part to look forward to. San Pedro sits out on Ambergris Caye, off the coast, so from Belize City you make one short, scenic crossing to the island, and it is a genuine highlight rather than a hurdle.

Most people take the short flight. You hop on a small plane at the international airport and lift off for about fifteen minutes out over the reef, the water turning every shade of turquoise below you and the island rising up ahead. It is easy, the schedules are timed around the international arrivals, and it is the best possible first look at where you are going. If you would rather arrive by sea, a water taxi makes the crossing instead, leaving from downtown Belize City and taking closer to ninety minutes to two hours.

We cover both options, including which one suits families, groups and nervous flyers, in our full guide to the connection from Belize City to San Pedro.

How long the whole journey really takes

Budget the door to door time honestly and you will not be surprised. From South Florida, a mid morning departure can have you at the villa by mid afternoon the same day. From Texas, add an hour or so of flying. From the West Coast it becomes a full travel day, but still a single day.

The one thing to watch is the connection. If your international flight lands in the late afternoon, you want to be sure there is still a hop out to San Pedro before dark, since the small planes do not fly at night. Booking the international leg to arrive by early afternoon takes all the pressure off.

What you need before you fly

US citizens do not need a visa for a normal vacation stay, but there are passport validity rules and a departure fee to know about. We cover all of it in Belize entry requirements for US travelers. Sort this before you book flights, not after.

What the trip costs

Flights, the connection, and everything once you are on the island add up differently depending on when you travel and how your group is sized. We break the whole thing down, including how splitting a villa changes the maths, in what a week in Belize actually costs.

Where to stay once you arrive

San Pedro runs from the busy town center out to quieter stretches north of the bridge and along the lagoon side. If you are traveling as a family or a group and want space, a private pool and your own dock, our beachfront villa on Ambergris Caye sits on the water with room for everyone. Once your dates are set, you can check your dates.

And once you have landed, our guide to getting around San Pedro once you arrive covers golf carts, water taxis and everything else you will use on the island.
